One of the most common questions we hear from pet owners is, “How long will it take my dog to learn the underground fence?”
Most dogs begin understanding their new boundary within the first few days, but every dog is different. Age, personality, temperament, and previous training can all affect how quickly a dog learns.
At Dog Guard of Central Ohio, we believe proper training is just as important as the underground fence itself. That's why we help our customers understand the training process and are available if questions come up along the way. We also provide our customers with a guide to help with difficulties that could arise and how to adress them immediately.
During the first three days, we recommend keeping your dog on a leash while introducing them to the boundary.
Short training sessions 3 times a day for 10 minutes at a time help your dog learn to recognize the boundary flags and understand where they should stop. Consistency is much more important than having long training sessions. Our pets have a short attention span.
The first week is when your dog begins developing confidence in their new boundaries.
Spend plenty of time outside with your dog and supervise them closely. We don't want your dog to become afraid of the yard. The goal is for them to learn where the boundary is while understanding that the rest of the yard is a safe place to play and explore.
Some dogs learn extremely quickly. Others need a little more time and encouragement. That's perfectly normal.
Occasionally, a dog may become hesitant after experiencing a correction and begin staying close to the house or porch.
If this happens, positive interaction is important. Play with your dog in the safe area, use treats or a favorite toy, and gradually encourage them farther into the yard.
Your dog needs to learn two things:
Respect the boundary—and enjoy the yard.
We generally recommend leaving all the boundary flags in place for the first seven days.
After the first week, you can begin removing every other flag as your dog becomes more confident. By approximately the third week, many dogs are ready for the remaining flags to come down.
If there's an area where your dog needs additional reinforcement, there's nothing wrong with leaving those flags up longer.
During the initial seven-day training period, we recommend keeping your dog's training focused on learning their new yard boundary.
Once that initial training period is complete, choose one consistent location for taking your dog in and out of the yard for walks. Over time, your dog can learn that this particular location is a safe way to leave the property with you. Dont forget to remove their Receiver/Collar before exiting.
Installing an underground dog fence isn't simply about installing equipment. Successful containment also depends on helping your dog understand and respect their new boundary.
If something doesn't seem right during training, don't wait to ask for help. Small training issues are often much easier to address before they become habits.
At Dog Guard of Central Ohio, we're here to help throughout the training process. We can answer questions over the phone and, when necessary, return to your home to help with training or make adjustments. Since we do guarantee containment there is no additional cost for our assistence during training.
Our goal is simple: to give your dog the freedom to enjoy their yard while helping you keep them safe.
If you're considering an underground dog fence in Columbus or Central Ohio, we'd be happy to answer your questions.
