Flea and Tick Season - How to Protect Your Pet

May 9, 2018

You are elated winter has finally left us alone, but with the warmer weather comes the parasites that cause so many issues with our pets. That’s right Fleas and Ticks!

Protecting our pets year round is our main concern with our Fur babies, but warmer weather just brings more challenges. You treat your lawn and try to stay on top of it but its just not enough to protect our pets.
While the mild temperatures and early spring weather have been great for getting outside with your pets, it also means an earlier flea and tick season.

With temperatures in the 50s, 60’s, and even 70s, an early spring also means an early season for these bloodsucking parasites.

Favorite Hiding Places

It’s practically impossible to keep fleas and ticks completely at bay. But there are some steps you can take to try and minimize the opportunities for contact with your pet.

Wildlife, including opossums, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, and even untreated cats and dogs can deposit flea eggs into a yard. It may be possible to reduce flea infestations by limiting the access these animals have around your house and yard. Your local nursery or garden professional may have some advice on what to plant or other strategies to discourage animal trespassers.

It can be helpful for pet owners to alter the landscape around their homes to make it unsuitable for ticks and their hosts. For example, keep the lawn mowed, remove leaf litter accumulations and prune shrubs and trees.

Its always best to contact your Veterinarian for your pet medication and I can highly recommend chewable Flea and Tick medications because I have seen them work when liquids have not! They may cost a little more but not battling these parasites or the stress they cause on your pet are well worth it!

Treat your pet before infestation! So you can enjoy the summer and enjoy your pet!
